Neurological Conditions We Treat...

At Ribble Valley we provide treatment for children between the ages of 0-18 years old with neurological and developmental problems, from our base in the heart of Lancashire. We have a team of vastly experienced neurological paediatric physiotherapists who are here to help and support you and your child through the entirety of their treatment journey.

Some common neurological conditions we treat include:

  • Cerebral Palsy

  • Down’s Syndrome

  • Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia

  • Muscular Dystrophy

  • Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA)

  • Dandy Walker Syndrome

  • Paediatric strokes

  • Charcot-Marie Tooth

  • Spina Bifida

Benefits to our Neurological Treatments:

At Ribble Valley Children’s Physiotherapy, our neurological physiotherapists are qualified and experienced in assessing and treating babies and children with different neurological conditions.During our initial assessments we will observe how your child moves and create an individualised treatment plan specifically tailored to their needs. We understand that each child is hugely different and, therefore, their functional goals are different too. With this in mind, we always make each child the centre of their bespoke goal setting journey and encourage each patient and their family to share what’s important to them. Do they want to learn how to stand independently in order to access a specific football stand when watching their favourite football team play? Do they want to be able to learn how to transfer from their wheelchair into a plane seat ready for their summer holiday? Do they want to learn how to ride a balance bike? Do they just want to improve their head control so that they’re able to engage with their family and friends more?

In order for your child to achieve their personalised, functional goals our specialised physiotherapists assess and progress/treat the following:

  • Current functional abilities

  • Muscle tone

  • Ranges of movement

  • Muscle strengths

  • Gait pattern / biomechanics

  • Balance and coordination

  • Pain

  • Quality of movement

Based on this analysis, we’ll compile a bespoke treatment plan which focuses directly on the challenges identified. Treatment may include:

  • Stretching

  • Strengthening

  • Improving movement patterns

  • Balance and coordination training

  • Improving standing balance and gait pattern

  • Advice and support for parents, support workers, keyworkers and or teachers

  • Gross motor milestone development

The ultimate aim of our treatment sessions is to provide a better quality of life for you and your child, and help them have the very best start in life.

Our paediatric physiotherapy assessments can be carried out in clinic, or at your child’s home, school or nursery depending on their specific needs.

Throughout your experience and time with us at Ribble Valley, advice and support will be provided to you so that we can offer you the best possible care.
